On 27 September, ADHRB delivered an intervention at the United Nation Human Rights Council session 54 under item 4 during the General debate. ADHRB called for the immediate release of the political prisoner Mohammed Hassan Abdullah Al-Ramal.
We bring attention to the deteriorating and life-risking healthcare situation among political prisoners, leading to a lengthy hunger strike among the prison population. One such prisoner is Mohamed Hasan Abdulla Al-Ramal, a 63-year-old prisoner incarcerated since 2015. His health has worsened since his life sentence in a 2018 “Zulfiqar Brigades” mass trial. Despite his 14 hunger strikes, the government continues to neglect his medical situation. On 13 July, he fainted due to severe abdominal pain, bleeding, and plummeting blood sugar, but received inadequate treatment in the prison. Mohamed was promised hospitalization and medication to end his hunger strike. However, the government reneged on its promises, and he resumed his strike, enduring torture and mistreatment during his transfer to the hospital on 23 August. Mohamed’s medical neglect mirrors the suffering of numerous political prisoners who have been on hunger strike for over a month in order to secure their rights. We urge the Council to call upon Bahrain to release all political prisoners and ensure proper medical care for detainees.
