On 31 March, ADHRB has delivered an oral intervention at the United Nation Human Rights Council session 52 under item 10 during the General debate. NGO’s calls out UN’s absurd recognition of Hadi Gov and Presidential Leadership Council in Yemen.
Mr. President,
Since the inception of the National Commission by ex-President Hadi’s government 8 years ago, it has not produced any credible human rights reports on the situation in Yemen, mainly due to the Commission’s lack of international standards, partiality, or transparency. We sounded the alarm from the outset and warned that this government is unconstitutional, and unable to govern anywhere in Yemen, let alone investigate crimes of which the majority were committed by the Coalition and the exiled government is a part of. We repeatedly questioned the Council’s bestowing recognition of this government that relies on affiliates of globally designated terrorist groups to fight alongside it and have appointed to its cabinet. The international community’s charade continues with the removal of Hadi and the recognition of a so-called Presidential Leadership Council, the Saudi UAE created and handpicked its members. For the past 8 years, the Human Rights Council supported the National Commission with capacity building. Yet despite this support human rights violations that rise to war crimes continue to occur with impunity and are not investigated nor compensated for. Mr President, It’s time to correct the wrong committed against the Yemeni people. We call on the Council to cease extending the mandate of the National Commission and assign an independent commission of inquiry with an accountability mechanism.
