16 june – ADHRB has delivered an oral interventions at the resumption of the United Nation Human Rights Council 43 under item 8 of the General Debate on the struggle of the citizens of Bahrain to establish Democracy and Rule of Law in Bahrain.
Madam President
The Implementation of the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action call for Democracy, development and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms are interdependent and mutually reinforcing. Democracy is based on the freely expressed will of the people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems and their full participation in all aspects of their lives.
In Bahrain human rights defenders and political leaders are severely punished by long period of arbitrarily imprisonment for calling for such rights. One of the main obstacles to implement this vital element of the declaration is the Alkhalifa tribal council in Bahrain which is the true ruling body in the country. The tribal council approved foreign forces of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates to march into Bahrain and assist in suppressing the pro-democracy movements in the country an arrest it’s leaders. Such intervention still exists today in several faces being military or economic or other adverse forms.
In addition, the unconditional support from the United States and United Kingdom to the government of Bahrain in the area of security, intelligence, military, and others embolden the Alkhalifa government to suppress the rights of the people of Bahrain even further. The Council should support the desires of the people of Bahrain to establishing democracy in Bahrain by demanding countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, United States, and United Kingdom to stop supporting human rights violators in Bahrain.
