Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) submitted an assessment of Bahrain’s compliance with its treaty obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) for consideration by the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Committee during the kingdom’s first review, which began on 2 July 2018. The report evaluates Bahrain’s adherence to several core provisions of the Covenant identified in the list of issues – including self-determination; non-discrimination; the right to life; free expression; free assembly; and free association – highlighting the government’s persistent failure to meet international standards.
Ultimately, ADHRB finds that more than a decade after Bahrain ratified the ICCPR, the enjoyment of civil and political rights in the kingdom has objectively declined. The Bahraini government is in serious and near-total violation of the ICCPR’s key tenets, and the international community must hold it accountable for such blatant contravention of its treaty obligations.
