UPDATED: Spanish MP Tables Parliamentary Question on Death Sentences Against Bahraini Citizens Ali AlArab and Ahmed AlMalali

8 July 2019 – On 1 July, Spanish Member of Parliament (MP) Fernando Adolfo Gutiérrez Díaz de Otazu tabled a parliamentary question regarding the death sentences against Bahrainis Ali AlArab and Ahmed AlMalali. He raised concerns that the two individuals were tortured and asked the Spanish government if they were aware of the human rights violations surrounding their cases. He also asked the Government of Spain if it will join various international groups calling for the death sentences of AlArab and AlMalali to be commuted and asked that the Spanish government urge the Bahraini government to institute a moratorium on the death penalty with a view towards abolition. This parliamentary question was a result of ADHRB’s international advocacy efforts, and similar concerns have been echoed by an Italian MP, French MPs, French Senator Pierre LaurentSwiss MPsinternational NGOsUnited Nations experts, and a Member of the European Parliament.
