Now Hiring: Fall 2019 Legal Intern
*Note: This is an unpaid position based in Washington, DC.*
Responsibilities
Interns will:
- Identify and research pertinent domestic and international law;
- Identify and research international venues and domestic administrative fora for human rights complaints;
- Prepare client complaints to United Nations human rights offices;
- Prepare advocacy content for website;
- Attend and take notes on conferences and events of concern to ADHRB; and
- Undertake research requested by supervisor as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate will:
- Demonstrate strong writing skills in argumentation and mechanics;
- Recognize the importance of supporting arguments with sources and have a demonstrated capacity to write with a clean and consistent citation style;
- Preferably be in law school, although non-law school students who show a strong aptitude for analytical writing will also be considered;
- Have taken or currently be enrolled in a course on public international law and/or international human rights law, or be demonstrably familiar with the concepts of public international law and/or international human rights law;
- Be familiar with parts of the United Nations system relevant to human rights;
- Be interested in and knowledgeable about human rights issues, particularly with respect to freedom from torture, the freedoms of speech, expression, and association, due process rights, and/or prisoners’ rights;
- Be able to work independently, take initiative, and exercise sound judgment and discretion;
- Possess solid organizational and time-management skills;
- Be quick to learn and hard-working;
- Be committed to public interest work and have a basic familiarity with human rights issues in the Arab Gulf countries;
- Be able to commit to 15-20 hours per week; and
- Be available mid-August through November (dates flexible).

The writing sample is the most important element in this application. Any piece laying out an argument with logical/factual support, and preferably citations, is acceptable. A piece of which the author is personally proud is much preferred to a first-year legal writing assignment.
