Ahead of Bahrain’s review by the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the United Nations (UN) body that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) submitted an advance report for the List of Issues Prior to Reporting (LOIPR) process. The Committee uses this information to determine the list of issues it will communicate to the state party, requesting that it report on these topics prior to the review.
ADHRB’s submission focused on the Bahraini government’s consistent failure or refusal to eliminate increasing ethnoreligious discrimination against the country’s Baharna and Ajam communities. It raised a series of issue areas for the Committee to consider, including the suppression of religious and cultural practices; demographic engineering and political disenfranchisement; judicial harassment; excessive force and torture; prejudice in access to welfare and employment; and sectarian extremism in the security forces. Ultimately, it found that Bahrain remains in severe violation of its obligations under the Convention.
