UN Special Procedures release Joint Communications Report for HRC31
The Special Procedures of the United Nations Human Rights Council released the 13th iteration of their joint communications report on Thursday, February 25, 2016, documenting allegations of human rights abuses from around the world. In the most recent edition of the report, the Special Procedures singled out Bahrain and Saudi Arabia as among the worst offenders of human rights throughout the globe, citing Bahraini violations in six different cases and Saudi Arabia in as many as ten. ADHRB has compiled summaries of each of these cases.
Updates from the Ground
- Authorities arrested 19 individuals, including 4 children.
- Criminal and appeals courts altered, upheld convictions, and sentenced 23 individuals to more than 141 years in prison.
- The court of appeal upheld citizenship revocation sentences against 2individuals. Courts postponed the trials of 109 individuals.
- The criminal court sentenced the Bahraini opposition leader Ebrahim Sharif to one year in prison for “inciting hatred against the regime” in a speech he delivered in 2015.
- Last week, the Bahraini authorities’ upheld deportation order against Husain Khairallah, whose citizenship was revoked in 2012. Following the sentence, Husain was forced to deport Bahrain.
- Bahraini Parliament further toughened Article 11 of anti-terrorism law by increasing the imprisonment sentence to up to seven years for anyone who justifies or promote any act considered terrorist act.
