Geneva, Switzerland — 22 September 2015 — On behalf of Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB), the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD), and the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR), BIRD Advocacy Director Sayed Alwadaei delivered an oral intervention on the ongoing political crisis in Bahrain. In addition to maintaining the imprisonment of top human rights activists like Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, Abduljalil al-Singace, and Naji Fateel, the Government of Bahrain has recently sentenced a series of nonviolent political opposition leaders to lengthy prison terms. Mr. Alwadaei called upon the Council to condemn these abuses and consider establishing a Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Bahrain.
