On 26 March 2015, Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) submitted a statement for the record calling for the release of political prisoners in a number of countries including Saudi Arabia. In the statement, Senator Durbin expressed concerns over Saudi Arabia’s “troubling lack of freedoms for women and the use of obsolete blasphemy and apostasy laws to stifle freedom of religion and expression.” Senator Durbin also called on King Salman to free imprisoned peaceful dissidents including Raif Badawi and Waleed Abu al-Khair.
