WASHINGTON, D.C. – 28 April 2014 – Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) today sent a letter to His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain urging him to address the human rights situation in Bahrain with his counterpart during his official visit to the country later this week. King Juan Carlos I is scheduled to be in Bahrain 1-2 May to discuss economic and bilateral relations.
In 2011, thousands of Bahrainis took to the streets to demand democratic reform and observation of human rights in their country. The Bahrain government responded by violently attacking protesters, leaving dozens dead and hundreds more wounded. Since then, the government has continued its campaign of suppression against dissent. Human rights activists are targeted for their work, media censorship has increased, and politically-motivated trails have led to more than 5,000 political prisoners in the Kingdom.
The Spanish government has been an active participant in the broader discussion of human rights in Bahrain within the international community. At the United Nations Human Rights Council, member states expressed serious concern over the deteriorating situation in Bahrain through joint statements in 2012 and 2013. Spain was a signatory to all three statements.
“The Government of Spain should be applauded for previously publically voicing its misgivings over the Bahrain government’s proclivity towards repression and abuse,” Mr. Abdulla said. “During his visit to Bahrain, I implore King Juan Carlos I to speak frankly with leading members of the al-Khalifa ruling family to raise concerns over the severe restrictions on the political and human rights of Bahrain’s citizens. Without the implementation of concrete and urgent reform, strong economic and bilateral relations between the two countries could be jeopardized. As such, it is in His Majesty’s interest to ensure that the subject of human rights reform in Bahrain is address.”

وقد كانتالحكومة الاسبانيةمشاركاً نشطاًفي مناقشةحالة حقوقالإنسان في البحرينفي إطار المجتمع الدولي. ففي مجلس حقوقالإنسان التابع للأممالمتحدة،أعربت الدول الأعضاء عنقلقها الشديدإزاء الوضعالمتدهور فيالبحرين من خلال البيانات المشتركة في عام 2012 و 2013، وقد كانت إسبانيامن الدول الموقعة علىالبيانات الثلاثة جميعها.
قال السيد عبدالله “ينبغي الإشادةبحكومة إسبانيالتعبيرها مسبقاً علناًعنشكوكإزاءميلحكومة البحريناتجاهالقمعوالاعتداء” وأضاف “أناشدالملك خوانكارلوس الأولخلال زيارتهإلى البحرين الحديث بصراحةمعالأعضاء المسؤولينفي أسرة آل خليفةالحاكمةواثارة المخاوف منالقيودالشديدة المفروضة علىالحقوق السياسيةوالإنسانية للمواطنينفي البحرين. حيث أنه من دونتنفيذملموس وإصلاح عاجل،يمكن أنتكون العلاقاتالاقتصاديةوالثنائية القويةبين البلدينفي خطر. وبناءاً على ذلك، منمصلحةصاحبالجلالةضمان مناقشةموضوعالإصلاح في مجال حقوقالإنسان في البحرين.”

Los Estadounidenses por la Democracia y los Derechos Humanos en Bahrein (ADHRB) mandó una carta oficial al su Majestad el Rey Don Juan Carlos I instándole a abordar el situación de los derechos humanos en Bahrein con su homólogo durante su visita al país este semana. El rey Don Juan Carlos I estará en Bahréin el 1 y dos de Mayo para discutir relaciones económicas y bilaterales.
En 2011, millones de ciudadanos de Bahrein se tomaron las calles para exigir la reforma democrática y la observación de los derechos humanos en el país. El gobierno de Bahrein reaccionó a los manifestantes con violencia, dejando docenas de muertos y cientos más heridos. Desde entonces, el gobierno de Bahréin ha continuado esta campaña de represión contra el disentimiento. Los defensores de los derechos humanos están siendo perseguidos por su trabajo, la censura de los medios de comunicación ha aumentado, y juicios motivados por la política han resultado en más de 5.000 prisioneros políticos en el reino.
El gobierno de España ha sido un participante activo en el debate sobre de los derechos humanos en Bahréin. Al consejo de los derechos humanos en las Naciones Unidas, los países que son miembros expresaron su seria preocupación sobre la situación en deterioro en Bahréin en sus declaraciones oficiales en 2012 y 2013. España fue un signatario a las tres declaraciones oficiales.
“El gobierno de España debe ser aplaudido por declarar públicamente su dudas sobre los acciones de represión y abuso del gobierno de Bahréin,” dijo Mr. Abdulla. “Durante su visita a Bahréin, le imploro al rey Juan Carlos I hablar francamente con los miembros principales de la familia gobernante al-Khalifa para ganar interés sobre las restricciones severas de los derechos humanos y políticos de los ciudadanos de Bahrein. Sin implementación de reformas urgentes y concretas, las relaciones bilaterales entre los dos países podrían estar en peligro. Entonces, sería ventajoso para el Rey Juan Carlos asegurar que el tema de la reforma de los derechos humanos en Bahréin sea abordado.
