At UN, Bahrain Human Rights Defender Raises Cases of Persecuted Medics, Jau Prison

Geneva, Switzerland — 18 September 2015 — On behalf of Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain, the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy, and the Bahrain Center for human rights, Bahraini medic Ebrahim Demestani delivered an oral intervention at the 30th session of the Human Rights Council. The intervention addressed the arbitrary arrest of protesters and prominent human rights defenders by the Bahraini government. Mr. Demestani, a medic who served three years in Jau Prison for treating injured demonstrators, brought attention to the degrading conditions within the prison, in addition to addressing the Bahraini government’s arbitrary arrest and persecution of 39 minors. Mr. Demestani called upon the government to immediately end the use of arbitrary detention and to grant requested country visits of the UN Special Procedures.
