Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission Asks Secretary Kerry to Call for Maryam al-Khawaja’s Release

Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain welcomes a new bipartisan letter released today by Co-Chairmen of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, Representatives James P. McGovern (D-MA) and Frank R. Wolf (R-VA). The Chairmen wrote to draw Secretary of State John F. Kerry’s attention to the recent arrest of prominent human rights activist Maryam al-Khawaja.  The letter outlines Ms. Al-Khawaja’s continued work to push for human rights and democratic reforms in Bahrain.  Ms. Al-Khawaja has continuously advocated for the people of Bahrain, including testifying in front of the U.S. Congress, putting herself at risk of facing repercussions from the Bahraini government.

Moreover, both Representatives are very concerned that with the continued detention of Ms. Khawaja, her safety could be in danger.  The Chairmen would like Secretary Kerry to help urge the Bahraini government to release Ms. Al-Khawaja and to drop all charges immediately.
